2. Fraunhofer Society
The Fraunhofer Society is becoming increasing international with centres in North America, Asia and Brussels. The Society describes itself as 'a partner for contract research in all fields of engineering sciences'. Recently, the Sankt Augustin centre for Informatics, Artificial Intelligence and Communications Technologies, the former GMD, near Bonn has been integrated with Fraunhofer. |

Academies of Science, like many Institutions in Germany are organised regionally, except for the Berlin Brandenburgische Wissenschafts Akademie, which has a national membership. Other important organisations include the Association of German Engineers (VDI) and the Institutes of the Leibniz Science Association, which include research centres such as the Heinrich Hertz Institute in Berlin, the German Libraries Institute and the Astrophysical Institute and Institute for Climate Impact Research in Potsdam. Unfortunately for internet users, web addresses often include unfamiliar spellings of familiar places and subjects, by interpreting the umlaut as an additional 'e' in the word, hence, Koeln, Luebeck or Muenchen, rather than Koln, (or Cologne), Lubeck and Munich. |
